Mary Baker Eddy’s “Science and Health” is no Longer Weird or Aloof

One hundred years ago, Mary Baker Eddy died, leaving an astonishing legacy to the world. A few people cherish the religious organization and church buildings Eddy left behind; however, one of Eddy’s books is regarded as the most valuable heirloom given to humanity, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

Weather and exposure tarnish gold, silver, and marble. Similarly, human language, time, and misinterpretation tarnish the written word. Therefore, the 19th century church buildings are restored and Science and Health is revised.

The revision I produced, 21st Century Science and Health, required years of preparation, prayer, and research. Thankfully, Eddy revised Science and Health over 300 times during her lifetime so there was a definite pattern to follow. And, I can honestly say, this work was motivated by immense appreciation for Eddy’s explanation of divine Science. I did not revise Eddy’s book out of desperation; I did not do it to prove a point; and I did not do it because I thought I could do a better job than someone else. The work was done vigilantly, delicately, meticulously, conscientiously, prudently, firmly―through sweat and tears.

Eddy’s Science and Health was carefully excavated. I gently removed decaying language, clichés formed by institutionalized religion, misconceptions found in society, and outdated social references. Readers of 21st Century Science and Health can now relate to examples and illustrations apropos to today’s globalization and technological discoveries. Science and Health is no longer aloof or weird.

The requisite revisions were made in order to present Eddy’s ideas intact and correct to this present time. A case in point is the paragraph discussing “Novel Diseases.” Eddy listed new diseases of the 19th century while I listed new diseases of today. I also updated terminology such as: animal magnetism, phrenology, humors, brainology, and consumption. Science and Health is now gender-inclusive. Also, Biblical quotes come from the diverse English Bible versions available to people at the many bookstores around the world. Christian Science is no longer trapped in history or culture.

Eddy’s Science and Health gleams again with the facts that: divine Science is timeless; the ability to heal spiritually is accessible to people of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and faiths; a divine perspective of truth can’t be hidden; other cultures and people have discovered these spiritual principles in their own way; there is no mystery to understanding and practicing scientific mental healing; and, the elements of human ideologies never harmed Mind-science.

Immense work is yet needed to advance divine Science and its interpretation of health, harmony, and holiness. I continue to buck the lure of remaining in a human comfort-zone and consequently have successfully finished the 3rd edition of 21st Century Science and Health which can be read side-by-side with Eddy’s version. Temperament science is religion

Reality –Having existence of matters and materials is reality. Activities of materials both for living and non-living are for some purpose is matters. Matter is transit stage of material. These are system, concept, procedure, law, custom, ritual, signal, impulse, talk, speech and planning etc., and converting to documents or records. But about all facts of matters is thought evolved in mind called temperament. That means temperament world is functioning behind seen world. Then there is a source of temperaments where all temperaments are evolved.

                                         As per medical science in brain mechanism there are gyri and sulci (folding and depression of minute billions nervous cells) for various purpose known as cerebral cortex (like hear, see, smell, recall, intelligence etc) in both right and left cerebral hemisphere in the name of  lobes which facilitate to nurturing the outside impulses  and creating various  thoughts. Exactly hormonal system (gland system) in human body is also help to co-coordinating the activities of human body cooperating with nervous system.

                                               That means brain mechanism is  physical machine ,and impulses are the natural resources for producing thoughts, physical activities(any work ,angry,laugh,cry,sex,fight,afraid,run,talk etc.), storing, spontaneous generating thought without outside impulses and reciting of memory etc.Therefore cells of 3fe0 brain of various zone are having different potentiality to retaining and discharging of processing  impulses, and discharging of various processing impulses from gyri feel in a media is called mind which is relating to the potentiality and character of man or on the other word potentiality of man. It is clear that a temperament media which flow over all brain cells through out the brain that is called mind. But mind has spontaneous flow and can receive every processing impulse as per its’ choice from brain cells at any time (in sleeping time also) and makes feel one accordingly as per every one realization. Choice of mind means concentrate of type of impulses or thoughts floating on it. One is reacting to every impulse coming form outside depends upon type of concentrate of thoughts floating in mind .This is the measuring scale of attraction intelligent or repulsion intelligent or foolish as well as happy and unhappy feeling.

                                     It is also observed that physical mechanism of every science analyzed in laboratory is connected with temperaments   mechanism .However various ways are created by so many super man called prophet or incarnation or Guru in various place, language and age through out the world to know about source of mind and control of mind for feeling happiness is called religion.

Religion-Religion is a way to know about play and source of temperaments evolved in mind, and meaningful adjustment of various temperaments for life and growth with effulgence of personality both individually and collectively.

                                                         Therefore religion is temperament science and its proper utilization in every field of society will draw refine and happy human civilization. Therefore so many organizations and spiritual centres are working for imparting proper utilization of temperaments for individual and collective happy lives. But due to less highlights about proper benefits of temperament science for career, prosperity, knowledge, social establishment and happy life maximum people of the world are taking religion as blind faith, superstition or unknown about religion. However it to be proved practically that religion is a temperament science for which men will accept and benefited accordingly.

Source of temperament-Outside impulses are entering to brain through outer sensor organs like-eye, ear, nose, tonge and skin and processing in cerebral cortex area and one reacting accordingly as per mind situation (instinct and habit). Now it is clear that every one feels present of temperaments in mind and outside behind of every physical function, and scientists all over the world also searching the source of temperament in the name of “Big Bang”.

                            Religions show the management and source of temperament practically through feel.see and hear. How it is possible may discuss below.

                               Nervous and hormonal system ( glands) regulate the physical activities of man by coordinating each other  through impulse or temperament media, but pineal gland which present in brain has no longer function as per medical science. But as per religion it has vital function to regulate the temperament for improving the attraction activities. That is the source of temperament. It is calm, steady and perfect stage of mind, on the other word “Existence of nothing” or “Black Hole” and its’ physical stage is Glow before forming of atom or cell. Therefore source of temperament can feel in mind is called happiness, hear with ear is called sound and see with naked eye is called glow.

Alternative Sci-Fi is a very interesting subcategory in which time travel or alternate universe themes are used to ask what if history as we know it was changed. For example, in The Man In the High Castle, it explored the idea of what if the Allies had lost WWII and the Germans and Japs won. An intriguing thought indeed!

Military Sci-Fi explores conflicts between national, interplanetary, or interstellar armed forces. The details of the armed forces are seen in great detail usually from the perspectives of the soldiers themselves. Although Star Trek has overlapping themes in it, it can be considered a military Sci-Fi.

Superhuman is another sci-fi genre that has become very popular recently. It is about humans with exceptionally great strength. Examples are found in Superman, The Hulk, Fantastic Four, and Spider Man. These figures usually find themselves in alienation from the rest of society because they are different.

Finally, the last popular genre of Sci-Fi is the apocalyptic theme of the world ending. Apocalyptic films include Armageddon and of course 2012. It deals with mankind’s reaction to all that he knows coming to an end. It forces people to find meaning in something greater than themselves – whether it be about love or religion.

Finn et al., (2005) suggest of time which does not progress. They fail as actual science. It’s falsifiable and calls “pseudoscience” that the first, and most convincing, sign of pseudoscience is that it claims that the results of the treatments are not testable rather they are measured by direct observation (Finn et al., 2005).Pseudoscience starts with a hypothesis which appeals emotionally and that has no scientific validity, reliability and is not backed by facts but it is rationalized with beliefs (Park, 2000). They support their ideas based on unverifiable stories, eyewitness accounts, and rumors. Pseudoscience is illogical and based on principles of human culture, religion, and traditions which vary from country to country, for instance (astronomy and fortune telling) (Nolen, 2008).  In addition pseudoscience also concerns itself with ideological as well as cultural objectives yet science is basically based on achievement of complete and constant understanding of the world.

Science on the other hand takes into action intense research before coming up with a conclusion yet pseudoscience has not done much ever since it came into place. When there are disputes about any data, the scientists do not stop but go ahead and research the more. Yet in the field of pseudoscience, if there is any inconsistence, they normally ignore or suppress the idea. Scientific information is usually, clear with no ambiguity yet pseudoscience is normally characterized by vague as well as ambiguous terms (Lower, 2008). On the contrary still, science is based on research and experiment. It is based on factual data that can be tested for validity and reliability. Reliability is when an individual gets consistent results if the experiment was to be repeated many times. Real science is progressing. It is objective and is a product of research and experiment and not elementary fallacy.

Concerns about pseudoscientific psychological treatments

Since pseudoscience is a fake science and it is mostly based on believe, religion, history and fairy tales, it is possible that instead of being helpful and beneficial it proves harmful and malignant. The issue is critical specially when applied to a medical setting. It is possible that a patient can be severely harmed if pseudoscience is the main force behind the treatment and the treatment protocol is not experimentally verified to be harmless. As well, in a society the excessive use of pseudoscience in many walks of life can be toxic.   Still et al, 2004, suggests that pseudoscience pollution may destroy our physical environment even prior to industrial and traffic pollution.

Example of a pseudoscientific psychological treatment

According to Nolen-Hoekesema& Neil (2008), during the Stone Age if a person displayed abnormal behaviour, it was believed that the evil spirit had infiltrated the brain of the person. For treatment, they cracked a hole in the skull of the person and were believed that the evil spirit will leave through the hole. This treatment was called trephination (Nolen-Hoekesema, & Neil 2008, p. 10). It is apparent that this pseudoscientific ritual was responsible for the deaths of thousands of people. Today we know by real scientific experiments and commonsense that cracking someone’s skull open does not help with any psychiatric treatment, rather it kills them by infection.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behaviour therapy is a psychological therapy which consists of cognitive and behaviour. The goal of CBT is to assist clients in recognizing their irrational maladaptive negative thoughts that are affecting their thoughts and emotion. CBT will teach clients strategies and techniques to alter and overcome their maladaptive thoughts. According to Nolen-Hoekesema, & Neil (2008), cognitive behaviour therapy is helping a client replacing maladaptive thinking behaviour with more adaptive way of thinking (Nolen-hoekesema, & Neil, 2008, p. 145).

Techniques that are used in CBT

Several techniques are used for cognitive behavioral therapy such as: Behavioral assignment, taking control, exposure (exposure and response prevention, modeling, flooding, repeated exposure), systematic desensitization, and systematic positive reinforcement. Each of the mentioned treatment is applied differently according to the disorder the therapist has diagnosed. For example “exposure therapy”; for obsessive compulsive disorder is to expose the person by touching the areas that client feel is dirty such as touching the washroom door or commode without washing their hands; for phobia the client is exposed to the object or anything that the client is fearful of. For example someone who is scared of the spider is either introduced to the spider slowly or all at once. There are different ways of treating phobias. One treatment doesn’t work for everyone so trying out different treatments and being flexible is important.

For what psychological disorders is CBT effective on average?

According to the literature review done by Munro, et al., (2005) it suggests that CBT is a helpful way of treatment. Also it is perceived as an acceptable intervention by most clients (Munro, et al., 2005).Panic disorder, Anxiety disorder, Post traumatic stress disorder, Stress disorder, Obsessive compulsive disorder, Somatoform and dissociate disorder, Mood disorder, Childhood disorder, Eating disorder and communication disorder are examples that CBT has helped in their treatment (Finn,  et al., 2005). Insomnia in men is also reported to have been treated   succefully by use of CBT (Tyagi, 2007).   On the contrary, there are patients suffering from bulimia who do not respond to CBT. These categories of individuals are those that suffer from personality disorders. It is important therefore for a therapist to find out why a patient is not responding to CBT after which he or she can apply axis II condition (Michael, 2000).

The distinction line between Pseudoscience is evident from the characteristics that the two fields possess. Science is an important way of explaining natural phenomena as it has valid reasons to any idea it gives. Pseudoscience has also been a source of several disputes especially in its application in the medical field. CBT is portrayed by research that it has assisted in the treatment of several disorders and has been very effective though there are few cases of it being ineffective.
